The first decision to make when hiking the Schafer Butte trails: do you want to go up hill or down hill first? If you want to go up first, then stick to the trails above Bogus Basin Road, if you want to save the huffing and puffing for the second half of your hike then choose trails that are below the road.
Hiking and biking at the top of the mountain has it's rewards. It is easily 10-15 degrees cooler than in the valley and the scenery is green and shady at times. It is recommended that you take adequate water, snacks, sunscreen and bug spray and of course stick to the designated trails.
In the summer you can take the chair lift up and either hike or bike down. Bogus Basin also hosts 'Music on the Mountain' during select Sundays in July and August.
Drive time from Boise: about 45 minutes
