Description
The HOP Regatta is an annual rowing event hosted by PORPA-Pend Oreille Rowing and Paddling Association members and volunteers. Our group is very excited to promote the growth of oared water sports throughout Northern Idaho and surrounding communities.
2019 marks the ninth year of this event, which includes both national and international, Collegiate, High School and Adult level rowers. The Regatta is held the last weekend of September in Priest River, Idaho at the “Mudhole” Priest River Recreation Area, located on the east end of city limits. Activities include practice sessions on Friday and Sunday hosted by PORPA.
Early Saturday morning, spectators and onlookers get their 1st glimpse of rowers amping up their day with unloading, rigging boats and checking their gear. It’s quite a spectacle to witness coxswains and coaches direct teams while they unload and maneuver 62ft. racing shells. After the customary flag ceremony, racing begins with a 1.7k-head race coursing through the Priest River, followed by a 1000m Stake(relay) race. The day wraps up with retiring of the colors followed by a delicious Barbeque luncheon, and medal ceremony.
In 2018, we had the largest number of shell entries with 42 headrace and 10 stake race entries. The highlight of the Regatta was the presentation of over 100 medals. Crews from 2018 have already indicated their intention to return in 2019.
We are looking forward to another successful Regatta.
